The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program recently launched its latest Animal Care Program standards on July 1, continuing its legacy of providing science-based guidelines and best practices for on-farm animal care. As the oldest and most widely participated segment of the FARM Program, FARM Animal Care remains a cornerstone, uniting the dairy industry in its commitment to exemplary animal welfare.
Version 5 of the FARM Animal Care standards, which will be in effect through June 30, 2027, brings a series of refinements and clarifications aimed at enhancing the consistency and effectiveness of evaluations. The updated standards reflect a comprehensive review process by governance committees focusing on critical areas such as pain management, transportation fitness for all age classes, disease treatment and euthanasia protocols, handling and stockmanship, animal-based outcomes, and calf management.
One significant update in Version 5 pertains to disbudding methods. According to the new standards, calves should be disbudded using caustic paste or cautery, in line with guidelines from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP). This update underscores the importance of using humane and effective methods for disbudding, ensuring the welfare of young calves and supporting the overall health of the herd.
The National Dairy FARM Program, established in 2009 by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) with support from Dairy Management, Inc. (DMI), is open to all farms, milk processors, and cooperatives. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of the U.S. dairy industry by demonstrating to customers and consumers that dairy farmers are dedicated to producing high-quality milk with integrity. The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy has aligned the dairy community behind the FARM Program, establishing it as the industry-wide, on-farm social responsibility initiative.
Over the years, the FARM Program has expanded its scope, providing valuable resources and guidelines across five key areas: Animal Care, Antibiotic Stewardship, Biosecurity, Workforce Development, and Environmental Stewardship. These comprehensive standards not only support farmers in their daily operations but also help foster consumer trust and confidence in dairy products.
At Dr. Naylor's, we are thrilled to support these advancements with our DeHorning Paste, a product designed to meet the highest standards of animal care. By adhering to the FARM Program's updated guidelines, dairy farmers can ensure the humane treatment of their calves during the disbudding process, contributing to the overall health and productivity of their herds.
